Meet

If you were tasked with finding the perfect mate for Satan, what traits would you look for in a potential mate? Dark, Difficult, and Demonic might be a good start. Sounds a lot like … the year 2020.

And that’s exactly who Satan is associated with in a fun new Match commercial, called Match Made in Hell and written and directed by Deadpool star and Match board member Ryan Reynolds.

The ad opens with a fiery Satan (no, literally he’s red) sitting on his fiery throne in Hell, looking lonely and parading on his phone.

He is matched with someone and they meet. “Two zero, two zero?” he asks, confirming that he has identified the right woman. “Please call me 2020,” she replies.

The two (played by actors Aaron Reed and Natalie Roy) both bond because they’re from hell, and we get a montage of them sharing all kinds of romantic 2020 moments, like training together in a closed gym, enjoy a movie in an empty movie theater, steal rolls of toilet paper and take photos in front of a dumpster fire. This is Taylor Swift’s re-recorded version of her song Love Story.

“I don’t want this year to end,” Satan said, in a statement that most of us probably wouldn’t agree with.

The ad, which has been viewed millions of times, both pokes fun at a hellish year and makes it clear that finding love – and happiness – is possible, even in the most difficult times. “We just imagined what a ‘2020 game’ would look like and this video was the natural and slightly distorted result,” Reynolds said in a statement.

As part of the smart campaign, Match even created dating profiles for Satan and 2020, who describes himself as “more home-like.” As for the scariest thing she’s ever done, “I’m still working on it.” Oh oh.
