Foldable will become weird. And I'm here for that. Just check these TCL reports disclosed by CNET. All kinds of strange and wonderful folding devices – two tablets and three smartphones, one of which turns into a Futurama style bracelet. There are renderings for tablets and phones that fold at a time.
Admittedly, little if any will materialize, but if this first wave of folding phones opens the design of smartphones in a new and interesting way, the sector will be all the better. Of course, we are just at the beginning of the process – and the first wave of folding products has not yet proved its interest for the public who buys smartphones, beyond the simple novelties.
We'll see space week at the Mobile World Congress, as well as Wednesday's event in Samsung, which should give us another glimpse of the next collapsible Galaxy. For now, however, the Royale FlexPai is the only device currently on the market, and it still feels like a developer product.
However, although TCL is not a well-known name in space, the Chinese company certainly has experience of the display service, both through its television business of the same name and from smartphone brands like Alcatel, Palm and BlackBerry.
These types of renderings are probably fairly standard for all companies currently experiencing a flexible form factor. If all the devices announced have been proven, it is that much remains to be done so that the industry adopts a coherent design language for these devices. And it is certainly possible that the industry never sets on a consistent form factor.
