Team USA flag bearers to wear jackets with cooling systems to beat the Tokyo heat during Olympic Games opening ceremonies

With Tokyo expecting temperatures in excess of 90 degrees, the US team’s flag bearers will wear special jackets designed with cooling systems during the opening ceremonies of the Olympics and Paralympics.

Ralph Lauren unveiled the runway uniforms last week, including a white denim jacket that will feature “wearable RL cooling technology,” according to a company statement. The technology is a “self-regulating temperature cooler” built into the jackets and will disperse heat and cool body temperature.

In 2018, the clothing brand used similar technology for the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, designing heated jackets for the cold temperatures in South Korea.

“Recognizing the summer heat of Tokyo, we sought to develop a solution for Team USA that fuses fashion and functionality, allowing them to feel better on one of the biggest stages in the world,” said the Ralph Lauren statement.

The USA team’s parade uniform will also include a navy blue wool blazer, matching shoes, cotton masks and striped belts.

Ralph Lauren has been the official Team USA supplier since 2008. The Team USA flag bearers have yet to be announced. The Opening Ceremonies will feature fewer athletes and will not include any fans.
