With just nine players available, Team USA has promoted seven players, including three NBA players, from its Select squad to five exhibition games over the next week.

Saddiq Bey of the Detroit Pistons, Darius Garland of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Keldon Johnson of the San Antonio Spurs will be available for a few minutes if needed starting Saturday night’s game against Nigeria in Las Vegas.

In the event that one of the national team players is unable to make it to Tokyo – three players are currently in the NBA Finals – those three would be candidates for the national team.

The Select team were hit hard during training camp. Seven members of the team were out of training on Friday. Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves was out after sustaining a minor injury Thursday, sources said, and the Miami Heat’s Tyler Herro was out for undisclosed reasons. Five other players were already absent after sustaining injuries or due to COVID protocols.

John Jenkins, Josh Magette, Dakota Mathias and Cam Reynolds, four experienced international players who have trained with the senior squad in a bid to prepare their members for international rules this week, are also staying for the warm-up matches.
