The first round of the FIBA World Cup is officially registered. The Americans won two of their three bouts comfortably, but looked fragile in the first round, need overtime to survive a turkey team at breakage. This victory over Turkey allowed to qualify for the final 16 in the second round.
The United States will open the second round of the tournament against Greece in Shenzhen, China, at 8:30 am ET. They will be deprived of the services of Jayson Tatum, injured in the ankle and not only missed Thursday's victory over Japan. It will be up to Kemba Walker and Donovan Mitchell to carry the burden against Greece.
The Greek national team may not be deep, but it has the best player in the tournament, the most valuable player in the NBA, Giannis Antetokounmpo. Brazil slowed it down with a new defensive strategybut Team USA does not have the necessary staff to play in the same style. Containing the best player in the tournament will be all that matters to Americans in this one.
