OpTic Gaming and Envy have always been rivals in competitive Call of Duty, although the Green Wall may have a new contender to seek out, with LA Thieves set to steal the show in the hottest game of 2021.
There has always been a constant in the Call of Duty scene. When OpTic and Envy go head to head, everyone agrees. The “eClasico” has long been one of the biggest showdowns in all of esports. But at the dawn of a new competitive season, could it be time for another historic rivalry to emerge?
With Hector ‘H3CZ’ Rodriguez and the power of the Green Wall helping to make Matthew ‘Nadeshot’ Haag the cultural icon he is today, there’s no denying the rich history between the two CDL franchise owners. . After a year on the sidelines, Nadeshot’s LA Thieves finally has a chance to steal the show and perhaps steal some of OpTic’s momentum in the process.
Could OpTic have new rivals for the coming year? Will this highly anticipated clash become Call of Duty’s next must-see match? Only time will tell how this burgeoning feud unfolds, though no team has more potential to capture the entire esports community in 2021, just like OpTic Chicago and the LA Thieves.
H3CZ and Nadeshot: the friendliest of rivals
H3CZ and Nadeshot are cut from the same fabric in that they are both extremely passionate fans of their own organizations.
It’s almost impossible to think of the great CDL brands without thinking of the faces behind them. Although current owners of their respective organizations, H3CZ and Nadeshot’s esports travel have been linked for over a decade now.
OpTic Gaming was the first Call of Duty Nadeshot team to ever represent at the pro level. He is the mainstay of esports history that he helped build as a captain during a six-year competitive career. It was the foundation from which he became one of the biggest stars in the video game industry.
Nadeshot and H3CZ were inseparable throughout OpTic’s rise to prominence in the esports industry.
Since his departure in 2015, Nadeshot has replicated that success at 100 Thieves and now, the LA Thieves CDL franchise. While the pair were inseparable in the past, they will both be aiming for the top spot on different teams in 2021.
Both are ultra-competitive at their core, but we’ve yet to see that competitive edge come together. Their teams made their League of Legends side-by-side debut in 2018, facing off a handful of times over the year. During that time, we only had one year to enjoy the game in Call of Duty.
However, each time they met it started to become more and more meaningful. In fact, the last time they faced each other was when the stakes were highest: in the 2019 Champs-Elysées final.
100 thieves got the better of OpTic for most of 2019.
A 3-0 sweep for Thieves is the end of their final showdown in Call of Duty. Knowing the importance of the Champs to everyone involved, especially H3CZ, there is no chance that the loss will not sting by now.
Now both owners have revitalized their presence on the scene and both are set to date who they think are the best players in the world today. No matter how many times they meet in 2021, or who emerges as the winner each time, all eyes will be on H3CZ and Nadeshot.
Dashy’s Golden Opportunity Against Thieves
2021 is the opportunity for Dashy to right the wrongs of the CDL’s inaugural season.
2020 wasn’t the sequel Dashy was hoping for after a breakthrough year in Black Ops 4. His first run with OpTic was full of extraordinary highlights and remarkable performances, but it all fell apart with the release of Modern Warfare.
As franchising took hold of the scene, Dashy was left behind as OpTic became a whole different entity. With H3CZ now developing the Huntsmen brand under NRG, Dashy has done everything he can to be negotiated more than. Unfortunately for him, it wasn’t in the cards. Although he allegedly threatened to bench, he was fired to a post at OGLA.
What followed was an eventful year throughout the CDL’s inaugural season with Dashy reluctantly playing alongside new teammates at SlasheR, Kenny and JKap. Poor placements in early events saw Dashy relegated to the bench, with little hope of making a difference.
2020 has been a difficult year for Dashy after spending a lot of time on the OGLA bench.
Cut until 2021, a year which, according to H3CZ, will be “transformerFor Dashy. Now the stage is set for the ultimate comeback in every sense of the word. Not only does he have the chance to live up to his hype in 2019, but he will be able to do so against the list that appears to have held him back in 2020.
When OpTic Chicago takes on the Los Angeles Thieves in 2021, it will be Dashy taking on his former teammates. He has a chance to clean the slate from thieves.
We may be in a different cycle with Black Ops Cold War, though outright wins over SlasheR, Kenny, and TJHaLy throughout the season could rekindle his star power. Not to mention that Dashy also has a history with Temp, having teamed up much earlier in their careers.
On the other side of the coin, LA edging out rivals in Chicago would only add fuel to the fire. As friends outside the lobby, there’s no denying that the discussions between the cards would be on another level given the history between the players.
TJHaLy takes revenge on OpTic
TJHaLy now finds himself facing former OpTic teammates Scump and Dashy.
While every player on both sides has their reasons for winning, TJHaLy might have a bigger fire under him than anyone. When the CDL came into effect, he too was left behind alongside Dashy.
Things didn’t quite panic for his first year in the league, and now the Ice Man is completely estranged from his former teammates. There is no more Scump next to him on stage, no more Dashy putting him online.
For once, he’ll be on the opposite side in the hall.
Again, he’s friends with everyone outside of the game. But when it comes time to charge against OpTic, rest assured that there will be an added sense of motivation for TJHaLy.
He will be looking to prove that he is a top player without them. That he can reach the top of the CDL ranking despite themselves. In the end, show that his team is stronger than theirs.
TJHaLy will look to prove himself against his former OpTic teammates.
Making a statement and trying to reverse the current OpTic lineup will be a scenario to watch throughout the year. Questions will be answered as the spotlight shines on TJHaLy to outdo his former allies who have become rivals.
While some added spice to the game, no one can forget how 2020 ended for TJHaLy. Losing a fifth game, round 11 1v1 against Envoy is sure to get stung. Now TJ has every chance to break through this low point and prove himself above Envoy and OpTic.
While H3CZ is inclined to promote Empire or FaZe as their biggest rivals of the year, there’s no denying that OpTic Chicago vs. LA Thieves has unmatched flair. With their legions of fans, it’s sure to captivate the community every time, unlike any other game this year.
As it turns out, fans won’t have to wait long to see their highly anticipated first showdown. The CDL Kick-Off Classic brings us six opening games from January 23 through January 24. Our first glimpse of the new eClasico brings the show to a close, as the thieves are all set to try and climb the Green Wall.
