Team17 fully acquires golf with your friends’ brand for £ 12million

Golf with your friends was a hit with players last year. While we don’t have the strongest opinions on it – giving it 6/10 stars – we did think it was a decent mini-golf multiplayer game, although it suffers from tedious controls. Clearly this has been a success for publishers Team17, who have now bought the rights and assets to the game from developer Blacklight Interactive for £ 12million.

The purchase of Golf With Your Friends will be split into two segments, consisting of an upfront payment of £ 9million, followed by an additional £ 3million after 12 months. Speaking directly about this, Team17 revealed plans to “create additional opportunities to extend the lifecycle of the existing game.” This includes other DLCs, with a potential sequel also in the works.

During the announcement, Team17 also shared their financial results for 2020, indicating that they had been “ahead of expectations” and had seen a 34% increase.

Team17 CEO Debbie Bestwick had this to say about the news:

We are excited to start 2021 with the announcement that we have acquired GWYF and see great potential in this IP. Over the past two years, GWYF has shown strong consumer demand and mass market appeal, doubling its owner base and succeeding on multiple gaming platforms.

GWYF is the kind of intellectual property we think of as proprietary, it’s successful and proven, but still at the start of its journey. The Blacklight Interactive team can be assured that we will take great care of this incredible intellectual property.

It remains to be seen what 2021 brings to Team17, but we’re certainly excited to see what they have in store.
