In 1978, at the age of 15, Charlery co-founded The Beat as the lead vocalist and principal toaster (the Jamaican style of speech to rhythmic singing). Each then formed his own version of The Beat, Charlery touring in the UK under the name of Ranking Roger, and Wakeling operating under the English nickname Beat. Charlery and Wakeling met for a one-time concert in 2017 and made amends before Charlery's death.
Last January, The Beat with Ranking Roger released his latest album, Confidential public. Around the same time, Charlery released a video revealing his fight against lung cancer and surgery to remove two brain tumors. At the time of writing, the exact cause of his death is unclear.
