Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith’s duo Tears for Fears is back. Today they announced their first album in 17 years. The tipping point releases February 25 via Concord. Check out the video for the title song, directed by Matt Mahurin, below.
The album was originally slated for release in 2017; the duo discussed the delay in a statement with the album’s announcement. “Before everything went so well with this album, everything had to go wrong first. It has taken years, but something happens when we put our heads together, ”Orzabal said.
Tears for Fears has worked with “some of today’s successful songwriters,” but ultimately disagreed with their old direction on that direction. “Eventually, this pressure and tension separated us not only from our direction, but also from each other,” said Orzabal, noting that they returned to work on the album as a duet with the support of the new management. “Suddenly, for the first time in a long time, we felt like we had someone in our corner who understood what we were trying to do. We felt like we had someone by our side. It was the first time in a long time that we had decided – we have to do it.
The album was created with longtime Tears for Fears collaborator Charlton Pettus, as well as producers and songwriters Sacha Skarbek and Florian Reutter. Their last album dates from 2004 Everyone loves a happy ending. Last year, the group shared a new song called “I Love You But I’m Lost”, which appeared on their biggest hits compilation. Rule the world. They were also headlining touring with Hall and Oates, but had to postpone momentarily due to a family emergency.
