Senator Ted Cruz is criticized for flying to Cancun, Mexico, with his family as millions of Texans went through days without power in a deadly winter storm.
The Republican senator has since admitted that the escapade was “clearly a mistake” when he returned to the United States on Thursday, following backlash from his constituents.

The Texas lawmaker, his wife and daughters are among tens of thousands of American tourists who made their way to Mexico between late 2021 and the start of the New Year. The state of Quintana Roo – a tourist hotspot home to Cancun, the Riviera Maya and Tulum – welcomed more than 961,000 visitors during this period, down just 25% from the previous year. In addition, nearly half of these visitors were from the United States.

“Flights from the United States dried up last spring as the pandemic took hold, but has continued to increase since,” the newspaper reports. In December, Quintana Roo recorded an average of 460 air arrivals and departures per day, compared to a pre-pandemic average of 500 per day, said Secretary of State for Tourism Marisol Vanegas Pérez.

Back in Lone Star State, hundreds of thousands of people woke up on Thursday to a fourth day without power, as a water crisis unfolded as storms wreaked havoc on the power grid and state public services.
