Ted lasso led all the winners of the 37th Annual Television Critics Association Awards 2021.

Rookie comedy Apple TV + has garnered wins in three of the five categories it was nominated for. Soccer comedy Jason Sudeikis – who topped all nominees – took home victory in all three of the TCA’s biggest categories: Schedule of the Year, New Schedule and Directing in Comedy.

Out of all the platforms, it was HBO / HBO Max that edged out Apple TV + and leading Netflix nominees as Michaela Coel grabbed hits in drama for I can destroy you; Jean Smart beat Sudeikis for his individual achievements in comedy; Easttown mare won the victory for the limited series; and John Oliver continued to rule the variety category. Netflix has won three wins, including the drama for The crown.

Smart was also a double winner this year, earning career honors from the TCA, while Golden girls won the organization’s heritage award.

The awards were handed out virtually for the second year in a row, as the biannual press tour was conducted remotely due to the ongoing pandemic. The awards were voted on by more than 250 television critics and journalists from the United States and Canada.

“Television was a big hit this year, providing much-needed entertainment that was a welcome distraction from the real-life drama of the real world,” said TCA President Melanie McFarland, TV critic at Salon. “The fact that comedy shows reigned supreme at the 2021 TCA Awards is testament to this. From the folk humor of Ted lasso and the catches of Hacks, to the timeless laughter of The golden girls, this season’s offerings have given us plenty to smile about in these uncertain times. We are delighted to honor these exceptional programs as we celebrate the 37th anniversary of the TCA Awards, and we look forward to seeing each other in person in 2022. ”
