ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (AP) – A 17-year-old woman, attacked by a shark on the North Carolina coast last weekend, said she had been amputated from one leg.

Paige Winter High School junior on Monday issued a statement to the Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, thanking people for helping her after Sunday's attack at Fort Macon National Park.

Winter said that she was suffering from serious injuries, especially to the hands: "It'll be okay." She goes back to emptying and said that she would require more surgeries. She said she would continue to stay positive and grateful that it was not worse.

Describing the teenager as "an unshakable defender" of marine life, the hospital states that Winter "wants people to continue to respect sharks in their environment and their safety."
