WEST JORDAN, Utah – A teenage boy was accidentally shot dead by his friend early Saturday morning in western Jordan.

Two boys, aged 13 and 15, snuck in in the middle of the night, according to the West Jordan Police Department.

One of the boys brought a handgun with him, and the boys played with it. At one point, the 15-year-old accidentally pulled the trigger, shooting and killing the 13-year-old.

Police said the 15-year-old immediately called 911 and officers answered a church parking lot at 5208 W. Cyclamen Way at around 1:40 am.

“He was distraught, he wanted to help his friend and he took whatever steps he could to best help him after this happened,” said Lt. WJPD Richard Bell.

Although it was an accident, Bell said police determined “criminal culpability” still existed and the teenager was held in a juvenile detention center on suspicion of manslaughter. involuntary.

Police will not release the names of the two boys out of respect for their families, Bell said. He also said they did not disclose information about the teenager who brought the gun or how they believed he got it, but they did not believe it was stolen.

Bell also advised gun owners to practice gun safety, such as making sure guns and ammunition are secure and stored away from each other, as well as never pointing a gun at someone or at something that you are not trying to shoot.
