An officer who responded to the rescue mission also died, authorities said.

A teenage girl died after saving her brother when they both fell into a frozen lake in Ohio, officials said.

An officer who responded to the drowning incident also died, authorities said.

The 16-year-old girl and 13-year-old boy fell through the ice near the boat docks at Rocky Fork State Park in Hillsboro on Tuesday night, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The 911 call arrived around 6.30 p.m.

By the time EMS and the Paint Creek Fire Department arrived, the girl was under the ice, according to Lt. Branden Jackman. The water was 36 degrees, he said.

The boy was taken to hospital in stable condition, but his sister was picked up by callous divers, authorities said. She has not been publicly identified by the authorities.

“She brought it out, before she succumbed,” Jackman told the WCPO subsidiary of Cincinnati ABC.

At the scene, Jason Lagore, an officer with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, suffered a medical emergency and was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the department said. He did not provide details of the medical emergency.

A 15-year veteran of the department, Lagore founded his first K-9 academy and led its K-9 Parks and Watercraft Division training program.

“Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of Agent Jason Lagore, who died in the line of duty last night,” Mary Mertz, director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, said Wednesday. “Our law enforcement officers and their families carry a unique and challenging burden of responsibility, and we are deeply grateful for their service.”

Lagore is survived by his wife, two young sons and K-9 partner Sarge, the department said.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine on Wednesday ordered flags to be lowered on buildings and public lands in Highland County and several other places “in honor of his life and service.”

Jackman had a message for the people of Ohio the day after the deadly incident.

“Don’t go out on the ice,” he told WCPO. “It caused a very serious tragedy last night.”
