Four teenagers from Oklahoma saved the life of a 90-year-old woman by entering her burning home and bringing her to a safe place.
Nick Byrd, Seth Byrd, Wyatt Hall and Dylan Wick, aged 14 to 16, worked together to warn neighbors, alert the authorities and rescue Catherine Ritchie after the fire of her home.
The four boys, all football players, were staying at Hall for the party in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, outside Tulsa. On the other side of the street, around 9 pm, Ritchie was preparing to fall asleep when she entered her room and saw her bed in flames, according to a Missy Ritchie blog post Nicholas, daughter of Ritchie.
Ritchie tried to extinguish the fire herself before being disoriented by smoke and heat. She tried to escape but ended up entering her closet several times, thinking it was the hallway exit.
The boys saw the flames and two went home while the others called 911 and went from house to house to alert the neighbors. Nick Byrd was the first inside Ritchie's house, kicking in the back door. He found Ritchie lying in the hallway leading to his room and, with his brother, took her out of the house.
"Thank you for being the kind of young men who thought of another person above yourself," wrote Ritchie Nicholas on his blog. Thank you for your safety, and thank you to your parents who have obviously raised you so that [led] to make rescue decisions and heroic in the name of someone else. "
