Popular messaging service Telegram just released its 8.0 update today with some new features, but there is an unfortunate loss for Android users. Sadly, it looks like Telegram has quietly killed its Wear OS app.
Telegram 8.0 makes a few key changes, including unlocking all of the audience size limits for a livestream. Viewers can now be unlimited. Mail forwarding also benefits from a few upgrades with the option to hide captions or the sender’s name. Telegram will also now display trending stickers and improve the sticker selection process on its Android app. Finally, more emoji will also be animated when sent as an individual message.
The biggest change in this update seems to be the end of Telegram’s Wear OS app. The app suddenly disappeared from the Google Play Store on Wear OS on our Galaxy Watch 4 and Moto 360 devices following the release of this update. This is remarkable because it was available as recently as Sunday evening.
As shown below, the app no longer appears when searching for “Telegram” in the Play Store. This means it can’t be downloaded again, but it should stay put if it’s already on your smartwatch.
We reached out to Telegram to confirm whether the service’s Wear OS app is truly launched, but the company was not available for an immediate statement.
Update 9/1: While the Telegram press team has yet to acknowledge our statement, Telegram support has confirmed that the app is no longer available for download from the Play Store. It was added that while the app is still installed for those who have it, the app “may stop working soon”.
As of Telegram v8.0, the WearOS app will no longer be available for download. Note that if Telegram is still installed on your WearOS device, it might stop working soon.
