Telegram reveals live viewers as part of version 8.0 big update

Telegram, the messaging app that increasingly looks like a full-fledged social media network, is expanding support for live video feeds with its latest update. Version 8.0 of the app, which is now available on iOS and Android, allows live streams to be watched by an unlimited number of viewers, up from 1,000 previously. Other new features include more options when forwarding messages and a shortcut to switch between channels.

Raising the maximum number of viewers like this opens the door for Telegram to become a full mobile live streaming platform, with the ability for up to 30 users to stream at a time. “The power to run your own TV channel is right here, right in your pocket,” Telegram says. The service also supports Clubhouse-style voice channels with support for “millions” of live listeners. This is rapid progress considering that Telegram’s group calling feature only launched in June of this year.

Version 8.0 of the app also includes an option to remove captions and hide sender names when transferring messages and media. Scrolling down a text channel now includes a new option to quickly swipe up to move to the next unread channel. Other interface tweaks include a new “choose sticker” status in threads and an unread counter in comment threads.

In January of this year, Telegram was boasting 500 million active users, compared to around 2 billion for Facebook’s rival WhatsApp.
