This difficulty probably stems from the fact that the Tenchu IP is currently owned by FromSoftware, which released Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in 2019. At first, Sekiro was in development as a successor to Tenchu, but From Software eventually decided to take development in a different direction. It’s unclear if the developer has any plans for the Tenchu franchise at this point. In August last year, Acquire registered a trademark for “Stealth Assassins” in Japan, which sparked rumors that a remake or spiritual successor was in the works. In the same interview with Famitsu, Endo mentions that it was just a formality, as the mark had expired.
Elsewhere, Endo mentioned that Acquire plans to launch an “independent brand” separate from its main production, with the first title coming “by the end of 2021”. Here’s our 2019 review of Sekiro, where we got a 9.5 rating, praising its “FromSoftware formula-focused stealth action take.”
In 1998, we gave Tenchu: Stealth Assassins a 9/10 review, calling it “the quintessential PlayStation game. Hard-core, smart, gory, and fun as hell.”
