Principle will launch “on HBO via HBO Max” on May 1, streamers announced today.

The news reflects another chapter in the sci-fi thriller, which was originally slated to hit theaters in July 2020, before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Seeing its release date change several times, after cinemas around the world have closed, Principle finally debuted in 70 countries, including Canada, France, Japan and the UK, in August. The blockbuster Christopher Nolan would open for the first time in select US cities on September 3.

While the launch of HBO Max will naturally bring the film to a larger audience, today’s news is interesting to consider, given Nolan’s conflicted relationship with the company behind the streamer. In December, WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar announced that in response to the financial shock of the pandemic, all 2021 HBO Max titles would be released in theaters and on HBO Max simultaneously, drawing the wrath of filmmakers who make their works specifically for the big screen.

New York theaters reopen today after one year; What to expect as tickets on sale from ‘Raya’ to ‘Tenet’ – Update

“Some of the greatest filmmakers in our industry and the most important movie stars went to bed the night before they thought they were working for the biggest movie studio,” Nolan said in a statement, after the announcement, “and woke up to find they were working for the worst streaming service.”

With nearly $ 58 million in North America and over $ 363 million worldwide, Warner Bros. de Nolan centers on the protagonist (John David Washington), a secret agent who learns to manipulate time, in order to prevent an attack from the future that destroy his current world.

Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Martin Donovan, Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh are also on the bill.

At the 93rd Academy Awards on April 25, Principle will compete for two Oscars, including Best Direction in Visual Effects and Best Direction in Production Design.
