Tennessee linebacker Kivon Bennett was dismissed from his post after being arrested for weapons and drugs during a traffic stop Tuesday morning. Bennett was arrested in Knoxville, Tennessee, and officers allegedly discovered 44.9 grams of marijuana, 58 plastic bags and a handgun in his vehicle, according to the arrest report, according to 247Sports.

“Kivon Bennett was fired from our football program following a traffic stop earlier in the day,” coach Jeremy Pruitt said in a statement. “There is a standard that our student-athletes should meet in Tennessee, and today’s incident is well below that standard.”

Bennett has been charged with possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm during a commission or attempt to commit a felony. He was also charged with tortious possession of a firearm and possession of drug accessories.

His absence is great for a team of volunteers who have lost five consecutive games. The 6-foot-2, 245-pound junior has made 22 tackles this season and leads the team in both loss tackles (7.5) and sacks (4.5). He’s had five tackles for loss in the last two games, including three against Auburn on Nov. 21 – the last time the Volunteers hit the field.

It couldn’t have come at a worse time either. Volunteers host Florida # 6 on Saturday. The Gators, led by quarterback Kyle Trask and tight end Kyle Pitts, are one of the most powerful offenses in the country.

The Volunteers and Gators will play it at 3:30 p.m. ET in one of two SEC games on CBS on Saturday.
