Oklahoma landed a commitment from Tennessee running back Eric Gray on Wednesday after Gray led the Volunteers to the run with 772 yards and four touchdowns on 157 attempts in nine games in the sophomore year of the 2020 season. Gray is the third transfer from Tennessee to join the Sooners program this offseason, following former five-star offensive lineman Wanya Morris and former four-star defensive back Key Lawrence, who also chose Oklahoma after entering the portal of the transfers during a tumultuous offseason in Knoxville.

With Oklahoma’s main rusher from 2020, Rhamondre Stevenson heading to the NFL draft, Gray should have an immediate opportunity to compete for portages – if NCAA legislation passes soon, which will allow players to transfer once without spending a season. Gray has also proven to be a quality wide receiver, ending the 2020 season with 30 catches for 254 yards and two more touchdowns.

The loss of Gray is a blow to the level of talent of Josh Heupel’s first team in Tennessee. The former UCF coach, introduced on Wednesday as the new program chief, will now have to replace the team’s top two players from 2020 after running back Ty Chandler transferred to North Carolina earlier this offseason .

Heupel said in his introductory press conference that he will not be signing any UCF players to come to Tennessee, saying, “I don’t think this is the right thing to do.” But Heupel will likely need to grab a few transfers to replenish the volunteer roster amid a wave of departures after Jeremy Pruitt was fired as manager.

There is also irony in the fact that three key players have moved from Volunteers to Oklahoma. Heupel was the Heisman Trophy finalist for the Sooners in 2000 and spent nine seasons with the Oklahoma squad before being replaced as offensive coordinator by Lincoln Riley, who is now the Oklahoma head coach. .
