Tennessee Governor Bill Lee said he regretted being dressed in the Confederate uniform for a fraternity feast of "Old South" at Auburn University. , as shown in a picture of the 1980 yearbook.

"Although I have never acted intentionally insensitively, with 40 years of hindsight, I realized that it was insensitive and I regretted it," said the Republican governor at The Tennessean.

A spokeswoman for Lee confirmed Thursday that the 1980 Auburn Yearbook included a photo of the governor and another man in Confederate uniform.

Lee was 17 when he joined the Kappa Alpha fraternity of the university. The fraternity ended the tradition in 1992, said a spokesman for the school.
