Terrence Clarke is going to be a very good two guard in the Kentucky backcourt this season, his only season at Lexington, we can assume. We got a glimpse of Clarke’s abilities in Wednesday night’s opener when he hit the double-digit score for the first of many times this year. With that length and athleticism, he’s high on the NBA draft boards and considered one of the best shooting guards in the country.
Until that day arrives, Clarke vows to do whatever it takes to win Lexington. Against Morehead State, that involved slipping and playing a little point guard for the Wildcats. Will there be more to come? Clarke will be ready if asked, he said.
“(I’m going to do it) as much as the team needs me to do it,” Clarke said of any future playmaker responsibilities. “I think we have a great point guard in Devin Askew, and Davion Mintz is our alternate point guard as well, but I’ve played both here and whenever the team needs me to play first, I’ll be as comfortable and confident as I need to be. I had reps in training too, so today I went there and had reps at this one.
“I’m confident to play any role on the team and that’s what I preached; I am as versatile as I want at the moment. Whatever I have to do in the field, I will.
In his natural stance, Clarke struggles to leave 1-on-1 basketball behind, an important point for Coach Cal once Clarke lands on campus. He’s already seen a big improvement, he says, and credits the UK’s depth for showing him how to let the offense find him.
“I think that’s the flow within the attack,” Clarke said of her transformation. “We have a great team so the ball shouldn’t even stop, that’s one of the things I’m trying to learn now. Like Cal says, I like to dribble or whatever, but I want to go down to get the defense moving, so I do my next shot.
“From the start of my arrival here until now, I’ve definitely improved a lot,” Clarke continued. “I’m just trying to attack as fast as possible. I had a roll today where I tried to lower a screen where I could have just walked off the screen so I’m still learning, but feel like I’ve learned a lot since I’m here and I appreciate Cal for being on my because, as you saw today, when I go down I can go to places to create shots.
For a guy who is learning to involve everyone and keep the ball moving, four assists for a start is a good start.
