Terrence Howard met Billy Bush on Extra's Tuesday to talk about the latest season of Empire. When the subject of Jussie Smollett's departure from the series was addressed, Howard became visibly emotional.
In January, Smollett claimed to have been attacked in front of his Chicago apartment by two men wearing "Make America Great Again" hats. The men allegedly called Smollett racist and homophobic names, poured him with bleach and stabbed him with a noose.
In February, police accused Smollett of organizing the racist attack after apprehending two suspects linked to Smollett. As a result, FOX has removed the actor from the series.
When told about Smollett, Howard said, "I mean, Jussie was the heart of the series. He's been my son for six years … I miss my son.
Bush then asked, "Does he feel like this in real life?" To which Howard replied: "Yes, unfortunately for me."
As tears ran down Howard's eyes, he grabbed a tissue and said, "That's real life, you know. We are not talking about dingleberries and applesauce. This is real life. "
