Rossi was very lucky not to be picked up by Petronas Yamaha driving Franco Morbidelli on the ninth lap of the Red Bull Ring race, after contact with Johann Zarco at Turn 2 which caused a frightening crash.
Zarco’s Avintia Ducati was arched over the track at Turn 3 when it hit the air barrier, while Morbidelli’s bike slipped between Rossi and Maverick Vinales’ machines.
Both riders took the start, Rossi putting the incident to the back of his mind and finishing fifth.
Asked about the incident, Rossi said: “It was so scary, terrifying.
“For me, now everyone is very aggressive but also small classes. I can understand because you play a lot. But for me it’s important not to overdo it [the aggression].
“You have to respect the other riders who are on the track with you, because we cannot forget that this sport is very dangerous – especially on a track where you have long straights and where you are always going 300 km / h.
“What I said is that in the lower classes too, you have a lot of runners who close the door when braking.
“Zarco is very wide and brakes against Franco, perhaps so as not to let Franco pass him in braking.
“But it was too close, and when we’re at 300 km / h, we have a lot of wake and Franco didn’t have a chance to brake.
“We’re risking a lot, especially me and Maverick. It could have been a potential disaster.
“I spoke to Zarco, I told him that, and he said he didn’t do it on purpose.
“But anyway, aggression is good, but braking against other riders especially at 300 km / h is a potential disaster.
Morbidelli was taken to the medical center for check-ups, but initial examinations revealed no serious injuries.
The safety of the Red Bull Ring circuit has been called into question in light of the incident, and while Rossi thinks the track is dangerous, he believes disrespect among the riders is more dangerous.
“I think the Red Bull Ring is a bit dangerous in some places, especially when you have a hard braking from 300 km / h to 50 km / h, and hairpin [at Turn3] we have to go in the opposite direction, ”he added. “It’s a potentially dangerous place.
“But I think that more [lack of] respect between the riders. It’s more dangerous than the track I think.
