Tesla delivered a record 241,300 electric vehicles in the third quarter, beating expectations as other U.S. automakers saw sales decline due to a global chip shortage.
The vast majority of Tesla’s deliveries (around 96%) were its new Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover, according to its report released on Saturday. Tesla said 9,275 of the vehicles delivered were Model X and Model S. Deliveries were up 20% from the second quarter and 73% from the same period last year.
Production figures have also increased. Tesla produced 237,823 electric vehicles in the third quarter, another record for the company.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk praised the company and its employees via a tweet for reaching delivery and production figures. In a separate tweet, Musk wrote “And thank you very much to our suppliers and logistics partners for coming despite great difficulties!”

While Tesla has beaten expectations, other historic automakers have reported declining sales in the United States. (Tesla’s sales are global and the company does not provide regional data).
GM has been hit the hardest. GM said on Friday it had sold 446,997 vehicles in the United States, a 33% drop in new vehicle sales from the same quarter last year. GM has slowed down several factories this summer due to the global shortage of semiconductor chips and battery packs for its Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV vehicles.
