Tesla has now officially ended its sponsorship program for its vehicles and everything else except its solar roof.
We expect that a new version of the program will be launched in the near future.
Tesla Referral Program
For years, Tesla has relied on its referral program to drive demand.
The automaker doesn’t like spending on marketing or advertising and instead, it relied on its user base to promote its vehicles and rewarded them in the process.
At the heart of the referral program, new buyers can use the referral links of current owners when purchasing a new Tesla and each party receives prizes.
Prices have changed a lot over the years.
At the height of the program, Tesla was offering free new Roadsters to owners who had accumulated enough referrals.
An impressive number of people ended up reaching this level, and we estimated that Tesla would offer around 80 new Roadsters in addition to offering big discounts to many more.
CEO Elon Musk later announced that Tesla was cutting its referral program due to cost issues associated with all of those Roadsters, which the automaker has yet to deliver.
Tesla didn’t end up killing the program, but slashed prices to 1,000 free Supercharge miles on both sides of the deal.
Is Tesla terminating the referral program?
Today Tesla updated its website to add a mention which, like As of September 18, 2021, it does not accept references for automotive products and solar panels:
“As of September 18, 2021, automotive products and solar panels are no longer eligible for sponsorship rewards. “
However, Tesla maintains the referral program for Solar Roof and even increases it to $ 500 per system activation:
“Currently, orders for solar roofs are eligible for the sponsorship program. To earn referral rewards, Solar Roof orders must be placed through your unique referral link. Note that referrals cannot be added after placing an order and rewards are given after the solar roof system has been approved to operate on your utility grid.
This change was reflected in Tesla’s mobile app:
The solar roof was only a small part of Tesla’s sponsorship program and now that that’s all that’s left of it, some are predicting the end of the sponsorship program era.
However, we previously reported that this is coming and should be replaced with something else.
Earlier this year, we reported that Tesla was planning to completely revamp the referral program:
According to a source familiar with the matter, Tesla plans to eliminate referral links, which owners often spam on social media, and instead turn to an app-based referral program promoting in-person referrals. “
The details are still unclear, but now that Tesla has stopped taking benchmarks for vehicles, I expect the changes to be announced soon.
