Tesla "has a chance" to beat 100,000 cars in a quarter of an hour – Elon Musk in an e-mail leak

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said the company "has the opportunity" to deliver 100,000 cars this quarter, which would be a new record, according to an email sent to employees by Electrek.

Last quarter, Tesla broke its record of global shipments with more than 95,000 electric cars delivered during the quarter.

In recent weeks, we have assumed that Tesla could aim to break the record with 100,000 deliveries this quarter.

It turns out that this is exactly what Tesla is trying to do.

In an email sent to employees and obtained today by Electrek, Elon Musk said the file was at hand:

"We have a chance to reach our first quarter delivery of 100,000 vehicles, which is an extremely exciting step for our company!"

As was the case in previous quarters, the challenge still seems to be that of deliveries.

Musk says net orders are "nearing 110,000" for the quarter, which represents an incredible demand for the automaker.

The CEO said the goal was to put the vehicles in the hands of customers who could take delivery by the end of the month:

"The challenge is to ensure we have the right car variants in the right places and to leverage our company's resources to help us with end-of-quarter deliveries."

Earlier this month, we announced that Tesla had begun allowing its sales staff to offer discounts and 2 years of free boost to help deliver cars by the end of the quarter.

However, Tesla had to make some changes to the previously reported incentives for customers that had been put in place for a season-end campaign because there had been "abuses".

The company is limiting incentives to try to facilitate inventory vehicle shipments at the end of the quarter instead of creating new orders.

As Musk said today in email, the demand already tends to exceed 100,000 targeted deliveries.

The Tesla stock (TSLA) jumped 3% after we reported the leaked email.

Electrek's Take

It would be an incredible step for Tesla and the electric vehicle at large.

If Elon is talking about it today, just five days before the end of the quarter, it is very likely that this goal is very achievable.

The figure of 110,000 net orders is also very interesting.

I would like to know the mix of orders and their origin.

Tesla still looks solid on Model 3 in some European markets, but nothing is absolutely amazing. Some exceptional markets that could have helped this new record demand could be the UK, China and Australia, in my opinion.

In any case, this bodes well for the expected increase in Tesla's production capacity in the next quarter. They will have the demand for that.
