Due to pricing restrictions, Tesla vehicles did not have access to Canada's new $ 5,000 federal incentive for electric vehicles, but the automaker has launched a new, cheaper 3-model, offering software-locked range only 150 km (93 miles) in Canada. to have access to the discount.
As noted above, the Canadian federal government has introduced a new $ 5,000 incentive for the purchase of new electric vehicles with a base price of less than $ 45,000 and a cost of up to $ 55,000. after options.
The government explains the incentive:
"To be eligible for incentives, a vehicle must have a base model manufacturer's suggested retail price of less than $ 45,000 for passenger vehicles with six seats or less and less than $ 55,000 for seven-passenger vehicles. or more. For eligible vehicles with six seats or less, higher priced versions (versions) are eligible provided the final manufacturer's suggested retail price is $ 55,000 or less. "
This prevented Tesla's vehicles from being eligible for the incentive, as the base model 3, available only as a "menu item", starts at $ 47,000.
In response, Tesla lowered the price of the vehicle to $ 44,999 in Canada, but the software also locked the vehicle to a range of only 150 km (93 miles).
The company wrote on its motivation page of its Canadian website:
Federal
$ 5,000 rebate for individuals purchasing a vehicle with a base MSRP * of less than $ 45,000, excluding delivery center charges. The following Tesla vehicles are eligible for Federal Incentive provided they are also posted on the Transport Canada website:
- Standard range 2019 model 3
- Range: 150 km
- MSRP OEM * eligible, before delivery center fee and VE savings: $ 44,999
- Call or visit a Tesla store to order.
- 2019 Model 3 Standard Plus Range
- Range: 386 km (EPA estimate)
- * OEM eligible MSRP, before delivery charges and VE savings: $ 53,700
- Order online
* The MSRP quoted is based on Transport Canada's definition for the iZEV program. This price does not include $ 1,300 shipping and inspection fees, nor the standard vehicle registration fee.
By making the new base, Model 3, available only by calling or visiting a Tesla store, Tesla has also made the standard model 3 plus standard range with 386 km (240 miles) of eligible range. incentive, since it is technically an option on the same car that starts at less than $ 45,000 and does not exceed $ 55,000.
We contacted Tesla for a comment on the situation and will update it if we get an answer.
At the time of writing, the Tesla Model 3 was still not posted on the Transport Canada website.
Electrek's Take
We predicted it would happen since we saw Tesla do something similar in Germany, but Tesla does it in an even more insidious way here.
What is interesting here is that Tesla can still do it without listing the base model 3 at $ 44,999 and making it available only as a secret product you need to know in order to be able to order.
The new version of Model 3 is not available on the Tesla Canadian Online Configurator:
In addition, Tesla has massively reduced the scope of the basic version for this purpose. He cut the price of the car by only $ 2,000.
It is clear that they want to sell you an upgrade to the Standard Plus Standard 3. Let's hope that they will also offer an upgrade to the Standard range for those $ 2,000.
If that's the case, I think it's worth it, especially for my fellow Quebeckers, who can add the $ 8,000 provincial incentive.
Even if they had to do it in a shady way, the standard model 3 range at $ 34,000 (about 25,000 USD) or the standard range model 3 at 40,700 $ are the two best electric cars that you can buy at this price. Canada.
I think the incentive structure of the Canadian government was also a shady way to prevent Tesla buyers from having access to this incentive. So I will call fair play on behalf of Tesla, even though I feel that Tesla should have published the new reasonable Model 3 usable range base and make the option available via its website as any other product.
