Tesla Launches New Self-Driving Full Beta Update, Elon Musk Says He Could Reduce Interventions by a Third

Tesla has started offering a new software update as part of its Full Self-Driving Beta program and CEO Elon Musk says it could already reduce driver interventions by a third.

It’s been less than two weeks since Tesla started offering some users the first version of its “Full Self-Driving” feature in beta.

As we have already reported, Tesla has already collected a large amount of data from its test fleet and is now using it to improve the system.

Yesterday Tesla started delivering a new 2020.40.8.12 software update to owners with the beta of ealry access FSD and they reported a smoother experience with the AI driving capability.

CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to say the update could reduce driver interventions by 33%:

“We measure this primarily in the probability of intervention. This update addressed several issues, resulting in perhaps about 1/3 fewer interventions. Most of the improvements consist of fixing silly bugs from big eureka moments. This is true for most beta versions in my experience. “

As we’ve previously reported, even though Tesla calls the system “Full Self-Driving,” it actually requires a driver to keep their hands on their wheel and be ready to take control.

Tesla can learn from these interventions to help his neural networks improve in future updates.

Musk says the automaker plans to push new updates every 5-10 days, which will lead to the wider release of the full beta of self-driving in the United States later this year.

The CEO warns that errors will never reach zero, but Tesla’s hope is that they will become low enough to be safer than humans and therefore be able to remove the driver watch restriction:

“Outages will never be zero, but at some point the likelihood of an outage will be far less than that of the average man.”

Musk has previously stated that Tesla could meet this target by the end of 2020, but now it looks like that probably won’t happen with FSD’s beta slated for wider release in December and that version should still count heavily. on the driver’s attention.

The new software update released last night also comes with an update UI with new visualizations:
