Pre-production of the Tesla Model Y is expected to begin at Gigafactory Texas as planned. Last week, an insider said Tesla intended to start testing production of the Model Y in early August. The company’s plan appears to be proceeding as planned.
Recent footage from drone operator Joe Tegtmeyer reveals just how prepared Gigafactory Texas is for Model Y test production. The machines appear calibrated to test the Model Y assembly. Pre-production of the Model Y will help train Giga Texas employees for large-scale production.
In early August, Tegtmeyer spoke to a Giga Texas insider who suggested production of the street-legal Model Y could begin in about two months. Provided the insider is right and barring any unforeseen obstacles, Tesla Giga Texas’ Model Y assembly line could be up and running by the end of Q3 or early Q4. This fits Elon Musk’s schedule for the production of the Model Y at Giga Texas.
“So it’s really a great job from the Giga Texas team, and then also a great job in Berlin-Brandenburg with the team there. So we plan to produce the new design type of the Model Y at the two limited production plants later this year, ”Musk said in the latest earnings call.
Giga Texas appears to be performing within Tesla’s timeline, and the same could be said of Giga Berlin. Recently, bodies of Tesla Model Y were spotted in Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin. Model Y bodies can be used to calibrate machines already installed inside the factory. After calibration, Giga Berlin can also start pre-production of the Model Y.
Giga Berlin and Gigafactory Texas are key to achieving Tesla’s Model Y target. In this year’s first quarter earnings call, Elon Musk predicted Tesla’s Model Y could become the best-selling car. to the world by 2022 or 2023. In the past, Musk has also predicted that the Model Y will sell better than the Model S, 3, and X combined.
As a crossover, the Model Y has a lot of potential in the United States alone. According to Statistical, the passenger crossover made up 45.9% of auto sales in June 2021, up from 39.5% in June 2020. Crossover sales were followed by pickup truck sales, which accounted for 17.6%. The large gap between sales of crossovers and other vehicle classes reveals the potential for Model Y sales in the United States.
