Tesla recalls 9,500 cars a week after ‘consumer reports’ compromised reliability

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla became aware of a quality control issue involving appliques on the roof of its Model X cars that could come loose and fall over time because they were not. not properly prepared for fixation. While this is not a safety issue, the finicky sconces could pose a hazard to the road, so Tesla voluntarily issued the recall to correct the issue.

For the Model Y, however, NHTSA said there was an issue with the bolts connecting the front upper control arm and the steering knuckle that had not been properly tightened. This could cause the control arm to detach, inhibiting the driver’s ability to steer, increasing the risk of a collision.

Consumer Reports said the Model Y has “well below average reliability,” while the Model S suffered from issues with its air suspension, main computer, and touchscreen controls. The latter was a stark reversal as the 2015 release ranked the Model S as its highest-rated car of all time, and that could hurt Tesla’s ability to meet its sales targets.

While the publication staff have always given cars high marks, reliability ratings are derived from the experience of actual owners, which could lead potential buyers to research other EVs to purchase.
