Tesla releases new images of its battery cell production, seeks to hire new factories

Tesla has released a new video with new footage of its battery cell production in Fremont, Calif., As it seeks to hire more people to replicate the production lines at new factories in Germany and Texas.

Tesla 4680 battery cell

On its battery day in September 2020, Tesla unveiled its new 4680 battery cell and how it plans to make the cell itself larger and without a tablet – something the automaker has never attempted to do before. .

While Tesla has already been involved in the development of new battery cells, the automaker has always relied on suppliers, such as Panasonic, to produce cells for its electric vehicles.

But in order to create a larger cell format with more power capacity and lower costs, Tesla had to design new manufacturing processes and rethink the production of battery cells.

When unveiling its new cells, Tesla claimed it would increase energy density and power six-fold, while cutting the cost per kWh by about half.

At the event, Tesla confirmed that it was already producing the cells in low volume at a “pilot plant” in Fremont.

Although this is only a ‘pilot plant’, Tesla still aims to have an annual production capacity of 10 GWh at the plant, which would produce more cells than many battery factories in the world. .

The automaker aims to reach this production capacity by the end of the year and use its knowledge gained from the line, which consists of many new manufacturing machines designed in-house by Tesla, to deploy production capacity. much larger battery cells in new factories.

As we have already reported, Gigafactory Berlin is expected to be Tesla’s first full-fledged 4680 battery cell production site.

Tesla currently plans to deploy up to 250 GWh factory battery production capacity.

Now Tesla is releasing new images of battery cell production at its pilot plant in Fremont:

With the new images, Tesla is promoting its battery-making recruiting minisite and encouraging people to apply for new jobs in Berlin and Texas, where Tesla also plans to produce new battery cells.

The automaker writes:

To make the transition to sustainable energy successful, we need to produce more affordable electric vehicles and energy storage, while building factories faster and with much less investment. The key to this is the production of terawatt scale batteries and much more affordable battery cells.

Tesla is looking to hire in cellular engineering, manufacturing, materials, equipment and operations, with the goal of creating a “vertically integrated team.”

Instead of posting job openings, Tesla encourages people to submit their resumes directly through this minisite.

However, we’ve already reported that Tesla is starting to list jobs for its first full-scale battery cell factory.
