Tesla teases production of Giga Berlin, 4680-based structural battery

Tesla hosted a launch party at the Tesla Giga Berlin factory in Grünheide near Berlin, which is expected to get final approval in November.

If all goes well, the first Tesla Model Y cars will be produced in November and deliveries to customers will begin in December.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, production of the Model Y and batteries (with 4680-type cells) by the end of 2022 is expected to reach 5,000 per week (over 20,000 per month) if not more – 10 000 per week (40,000 per month). These numbers seem extremely high.

The company presents the test production, but probably the most interesting thing is the example of the structural battery pack, made up of Tesla’s type 4680 cylindrical cells (the image above is from Paul Kelly).

The 4,680 cells are Tesla’s latest battery cells, currently being produced at a pilot facility in California.

They are designed to become an integral part of the structure of the car, which should significantly reduce overall weight and improve range.

There is also a separate standard version with type 2170 cells, which can be used as a first step:

The seats will be installed directly on the battery, instead of inserting them into the frame by robots.

The Model Y will also have large front and rear giga-castings.

About the start of production, Tesla seems to be launching a new alcoholic product – Gigabeer – Gigabier.
