We hope you didn’t care about this brand new Y-model from the standard lineup. Electrek Has learned, Tesla quietly stopped taking orders for the “entry” version of the electric crossover just weeks after its launch. Right now, you’ll need to spend at least $ 48,990 on the long-range all-wheel-drive variant ($ 1,000 less than before) if you want more interior space than the Model 3 can offer.
It’s unclear why Tesla ditched the standard lineup trim, or whether or not this is a temporary move. We asked Tesla for comment, but the electric vehicle maker has reportedly disbanded its public relations team.
It would be a strange decision if it were permanent. Tesla cut the base price of the Model Y to $ 39,990 a few days earlier in an apparent effort to boost sales – it would clearly have the opposite effect. This could represent a pause as Tesla processes an order book, retools production, or otherwise decides that it cannot sell the Standard lineup vehicle for a while.
If nothing else, the removal highlights complaints about Tesla’s sales strategy. The company’s frequent pricing changes can make its electric vehicles more accessible than those of seasoned automakers, many of whom are waiting for the new model years to lower prices or add features. However, the inconsistency also makes it difficult to know when is the right time to buy. You can delay a purchase only to see an offer disappear without warning, leaving you with the choice to keep waiting or buy an alternative.
