Elon Musk has announced that Tesla is officially moving its headquarters to Austin, Texas, which he has threatened to do in the past.
At the start of the covid-19 pandemic, Elon Musk said Tesla would leave California after being frustrated with the restrictions, making it difficult for the automaker to restart production.
Shortly after, Tesla announced plans to build a large factory and complex in Austin, Texas, but the automaker’s headquarters remained in Palo Alto.
Musk himself has officially moved to Texas and there have been rumors that Tesla will follow suit soon.
At Tesla’s shareholders meeting in 2021, the CEO confirmed that Tesla was moving its headquarters to Austin, Texas.
However, Musk pointed out that Tesla will continue to expand its presence in California:
“We continue to expand our presence in California, we are not leaving California, but we are hitting the sides of the bowl.”
Musk said Tesla plans to increase vehicle production at the Fremont plant by 50%.
This time, the CEO didn’t talk about politics in California, but instead said Tesla “pushed him as far as he could in the Bay Area.”
He added that it is difficult for employees to afford houses and he believes Tesla will be more competitive in Austin.
Musk did not specify where Tesla’s Austin headquarters will be, but it looks like it will be around the Gigafactory Texas site as the CEO again referred to the “green paradise” they plan to build at the site.
The CEO previously described the site Tesla plans to build at Gigafactory Austin:
“It’s about 2,000 acres, and we’re going to make it into a plant that’s going to be wonderful. It’s right on the Colorado River. So we are going to have a boardwalk, where there will be a hiking / biking trail. It will essentially be an ecological paradise, birds in the trees, butterflies, fish in the stream, and it will also be open to the public. So not closed and only Tesla.
