Tesla will begin to downgrade the Model 3 Standard Range software within 10 days and offer the upgrade option

Some Tesla owners who bought the standard version of the Model 3 for $ 35,000 escaped with the features of Tesla's more expensive Standard Range Plus Model 3 range, but the automaker now announces that it will demote the software of these vehicles 10 days.

Earlier this year, Tesla launched its base model 3 for $ 35,000, a promise the company had been promising for years.

But things got complicated after the launch, as Tesla removed the configuration from its website and made it harder to order the vehicle a month later.

In addition, the vehicle was only sold as a software-locked version of Model 3 "Standard Range Plus" (SR +).

Tesla explained:

"Its range will be limited to 10% and several features will be disabled via software (including our integrated music streaming service, Live Traffic Visualization and heated seats).

In terms of equipment, the two versions of the vehicle, which start now at $ 35,400 and $ 39,900, are identical.

The manufacturer started delivering the Model 3 to people who bought the Standard line last month, but we checked with a few owners and they all reported that they still had access to the same features as the 'Standard Range Plus' nowadays.

Last week, we announced that Tesla was starting to offer model 3 of the standard range, with software features.

This meant that Tesla had finally written the software for the standard range and we expected the manufacturer to start downgrading the software of those who bought the "standard range" but received a "standard plus range".

Indeed, Tesla now warns the owners of Model 3 of the "Standard Range" that they will soon be downgraded.

The builder sent the following email to the owners:

"Your model 3 will soon receive new software that matches the configuration of the standard model 3 range you ordered. As we announced in April, this includes a limited range of 220 km and the removal of several software features. To continue to enjoy the extended range, faster acceleration, and Model Standard Range Plus autopilot capabilities, schedule a maintenance appointment through your Tesla application. "

We contacted Tesla about the email to ask him his price and we will update him if we get an answer.

Electrek's Take

As we speculated in our last article on the Standard Range software, it seems that Tesla is taking its time to write the software and let the owners take advantage of Standard Range Plus to try to convince them to upgrade.

They did not confirm the price, but the difference before delivery is currently $ 4,500.

Although I do not think that the number of Standard Model 3 vehicles is currently very high, it would be an interesting way for Tesla to get more revenue before the end of the quarter through a software update (or lack of software update). )

Interestingly, Tesla says owners who want to keep their current features must schedule a service appointment.

We do not know why, but it could be that the software update is launched anyway and that a Tesla service technician is needed to reverse it.
