Tesla CEO Elon Musk seems very optimistic about the environmental priorities of the new Biden administration, noting in a lengthy phone interview with Fortune last week, he was “excited” by the country’s renewed focus on climate issues. During his interview, Musk explained why he was excited about the Biden administration, its split from the Trump administration, and his hopes for the near future.
Musk noted that he was extremely happy with the change in the White House, especially President Joe Biden’s open stance on tackling climate change. This is a notable departure from the position of the Trump administration, which has taken a number of steps and adopted initiatives that have pushed the pro-climate agenda aside. “I am delighted that the new administration is focusing on the climate,” Musk said, noting that he was closely monitoring the movements of the new president.

In addition to sharing his thoughts on the Biden administration, Musk also discussed his brief stint on former US President Donald Trump’s Economic Advisory Board and his manufacturing jobs initiative board. Musk ultimately stepped down from those boards after Trump announced he was withdrawing from the Paris Agreement on climate change. The move, Musk said, was the last straw for him, especially since he’s the head of the world’s leading EV company.
“I said… it’s very important that we address the climate crisis and everything. I pretty much took him at his word, that he really meant it, ”Musk said.
The Tesla CEO said he is currently waiting to get involved again as the new US president rolls out and implements detailed environmental policies, including a focus on electric vehicles. This became a key focus recently when Biden announced his intention to use fully electric cars as vehicles for the US government. In his announcement, Biden noted that the initiative would likely create around 1 million autoworker jobs in clean energy.
Musk said he had “not yet wanted” to contact the new US president. However, the CEO noted that his associates are already in informal contact with the White House, as Tesla knows a lot of pro-environment folks that the Biden administration is bringing into its fold. “My team, being very pro-environment, they know a lot of people that Biden brings in,” Musk said, adding that “we will do our best to be of service to the new administration when it comes to the climate.”
