Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed on Friday that his company’s move to Texas was, in part, inspired by an inflammatory tweet from a California lawmaker.
Musk’s confirmation came in response to a Tesla blog post, claiming that “Musk selflessly tried to resist government actions” by reopening a Fremont factory in violation of Alameda County’s COVID-19 precautions in 2020. For background, Musk sued the county. on the stay-at-home order which shut down the company’s plant and dropped the lawsuit 11 days later.
Tesla’s fan blog – titled “Tesla moved headquarters to Texas following explicit offer from California assembly woman” – calls Gonzalez for tweeting a curse at Musk, claiming the tweet ” indicates serious problems in the state apparatus “.
Musk tweeted, in response to the article and its title, “Exactly.”
Gonzalez was bewildered, tweeting that the CEO “is making too much money with taxpayer grants in California to retire.” This comment refers to the fact that Tesla will keep its California factories.

She then tweeted screenshots of her being harassed on Twitter and Instagram by Tesla enthusiasts.
At a press conference in Oakland on Friday in which he praised Musk for “his entrepreneurial spirit,” California Governor Gavin Newsom responded to Gonzalez’s comment.
