Tesla’s new steering wheel in Model S and Model X comes with more than meets the eye.

New Tesla Model S and Model X
Today, Tesla unveiled its much-anticipated new update of the 2021 S and X Models.
New EVs have updated powertrains and batteries with the latest technology from Tesla – overtaking the Model 3 and Model Y in some cases and surpassing them in others.
But the most anticipated change is the interior design, which has received a complete refresh.
First impressions were mixed as some of the features turned out to be polirazing – nothing more than the new steering wheel.
New Tesla steering wheel
Tesla introduces an all-new steering wheel in the new Model S and Model X.
In the new configurator, Tesla describes the new steering wheel, which does not have a controller:
“The ultimate focus on driving: no rods, no shifting. With a rodless steering yoke, you can enjoy both the best car to drive and the best car to drive. “
Previously, Tesla used rods on its steering wheels like most other vehicles for turn signals, headlights, and wiper controls, and unlike other automakers, Tesla even used steering wheel rods for others. controls like autopilot and drive modes (PRND).
Tesla’s new steering wheel has none of these as the steering column is not equipped with any joysticks.
Rather, it’s wrapped in a simplified butterfly steering wheel design:
In order to replace the stems, Tesla relies on a mix of AI and forced touch buttons on the steering wheels to replace these functions.
The steering wheel features the same volutes that are already found on Model 3 and Model Y wheels, but now includes new force touch buttons for turn signals, high beam, horn, pilot automatic, windscreen control and voice commands:
But in the end, Tesla hopes that all of these functions will be performed automatically by the vehicle.
This strategy is particularly illustrated by Tesla’s solution to replace the drive mode lever (PRND).
Electrek has obtained internal documents from Tesla which show the automaker is considering using Autopilot and AI to find out which drive mode to activate.
Tesla writes in the document:
“The vehicle uses its autopilot sensors to intelligently and automatically determine and select intended driving modes. For example, if the front of the Model S / X is facing a garage wall, it will detect this and automatically shift into reverse once the driver presses the brake pedal. This takes one more step for drivers of the world’s smartest production cars. “
It’s quite a change in the way a car is run, but Tesla is making sure people aren’t too confused about it by adding forced touch controls for ‘Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive’ driving modes. At the base of the phone charger. on the center console.
