TAOS, NEW MEXICO – The Sheriff of Taos County said late Thursday that Kylie Rae Harris, a rising Texas singer from Brazil, had caused a fatal car accident that cost Harris and a 16-year-old high school student three lives.
The community of Taos, New Mexico, mourns the death of Maria Elena Cruz, 16 years old.
"At this point, I will say with the greatest certainty that Miss Cruz was an innocent victim of this senseless accident caused by Ms. Harris," said Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe, according to TaosNews.com.

Authorities said that speed and alcohol were an important factor in the accident occurred Wednesday night. They did not explicitly state that Harris was intoxicated and await the results of a toxicology report.
Authorities said Harris was driving a 2017 Chevrolet Black Equinox by cutting the back of a black Chevrolet Avalanche, forcing Harris's vehicle to clear a path in the oncoming traffic lane. That's where she collided with a 2008 white Jeep driven by 16-year-old Cruz, reported the daily Taos News.
Cruz, of San Cristobal, nearby, and Harris were declared dead on the spot.
Cruz's father is the deputy chief of the local volunteer fire department and was one of the people who reacted to the fatal crash, local newspaper reported.

An online fundraiser aimed at raising funds for Cruz's funeral revealed that the teenager was "the sweetest, most affectionate and unbelievable ever human".
Harris, who is survived by his 6 year old daughter, was in New Mexico for a show at a music festival in Taos.
The Daily Mail reported that Harris had already been convicted of CFA in which his blood alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit. As part of her sentence, she had to install a breathalyzer in her vehicle, the Daily Mail reported.

"The fuel distance is 46 km and I'm at 36 from the nearest petrol station.Baby baby Jesus, please, do not let me fail at NM," Harris wrote on Twitter a few hours before the accident.
A few hours before the accident, she posted a photo on Instagram with a caption on the long road trip, according to Saving Texas Country. The message has since been deleted.

Harris won the 2014 New Singer 's Award at the Texas Regional Radio Music Awards after the release of her first EP in 2013.
