There’s a new sheriff in town for the Houston Texans, and that’s not what we expected. The team would hire David Culley as their new head coach after a long, controversial search, with the 65-year-old becoming the NFL’s longest-serving head coach for the first time in league history. Culley joins the Texans after spending two seasons with John Harbaugh on the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff and has 27 seasons of NFL coaching experience – over 40 years in all. As he prepares to take the reins in South Texas, it looks like he and the organization already have eyes on who will join him, and that would include Lovie Smith and Josh McCown, by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
Smith would be a big advantage for the Texans in the defensive coordinator role, given his pro-level profile.
A longtime former Chicago Bears head coach Smith was defined by his ability to come together and train a hard-hitting defense, which helped him land the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach position after her divorce from the Bears. The Buccaneers would change course in no time and tackle a much bigger whale in Bruce Arians, and Smith would bring his talents back to the college ranks as the University of Illinois head coach in 2016 – where he remained until parting ways with Fighting Illini in 2020. If he chooses to join Culley as a DC in Houston, that will mark the end of a half-decade of NFL hiatus, where he left with an 89-87 record as a head coach.
As reported, he could also be joined by former quarterback Josh McCown, who interviewed for the head coach job with the Texans before being beaten by Culley. It’s unclear what role McCown would play, but it’s clear Houston likes what he would bring to the table. They would also keep Tim Kelly on board as the offensive coordinator, presumably to maintain some level of continuity on the staff for Pro Bowl quarterback Deshaun Watson, who remains unhappy with the team and has yet to spoke publicly about Culley’s hiring. after watching him beat Leslie Frazier, Jim Caldwell and Eric Bieniemy; and it was for the latter that Watson beat the table at the start.
This is simply one of the reasons Watson’s relationship with the Texans is fractured, and while Culley is working on getting his staff together for 2021, he knows his biggest problem will be trying to make sure his quarterback. franchise back sticks around – something that is much easier said than done at this point.
