Jadeveon Clowney's time with the Houston Texans is over.
On August 31, 2014's former No. 1 pick was traded to the Seattle Seahawks in an exchange largely mocked by league spectators.
Houston sent Clowney to Seattle, receiving in return linebackers Jacob Martin and Barkevious Mingo, as well as a third-round pick.
Coach Bill O'Brien, a member of the Houston board of directors, spoke when he met the media on Monday at NRG Stadium. He feels that the club has received fair compensation.
"We do it," said O'Brien. "There was a lot of discussion. There were contract proposals between the player and us on which we simply could not agree on the franchise label. The spirit of the franchise brand is to try to give you more time to eventually reach an agreement on a long-term contract.
"We could not reach this agreement, and we had several discussions with several teams for several months and we feel that we have made the best decision for the team."
Many Texan fans and members of the media have criticized Houston's return to Clowney's business. Although South Carolina's product was a little excited about the NFL draft in 2014, after its vicious success over Vincent Smith in Michigan in the 2013 Outback Bowl, Clowney brought a lot to the table. during his tenure in Houston.
The 26-year-old turned out to be one of the best blockers in the NFL. However, in a passing league in 2019, he has never recorded a double-digit bag during his five seasons as a Texan. To be fair, he approached with 9.5 and 9.0 in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Clowney, however, was a little unreliable in terms of health, injuries that troubled him throughout his career. He has only played 16 full games in 2017, the only season of his career in which he has never missed a game.
Despite the return of a third-round pick and two Seattle linebackers, many are not convinced that Mingo and Martin will catch up with that productivity on the defensive front left by Clowney. But O'Brien remains optimistic.
"I understand that everyone is going to dissect how we did it and what we received and what we gave in Seattle," O'Brien said. "In the end, we did what we felt was in the best interest of our organization and our team to go forward. We expect to have a third round pick in 2020 and we have also added two very versatile players. They play hard, they play with a lot of effort, they are very talented guys and we have the feeling to do what is best for the team.
"He had unique skills, there is no doubt about that, so I think that in terms of what he did and what he could do, we talked a lot about it. We expected he was not present, so we held those discussions defensively. Romeo (Crennel) is an excellent football coach. He has an excellent staff under his feet and we are on the right track. "
The impact of this deal on Houston's defense will be evident on Sept. 9, when Texans open the regular season at the New Orleans Saints on Monday night.
