Why is the Houston Texans exactly interviewing a 65-year-old wide receiver coach to be the man on the sidelines when he’s never even been an NFL coordinator?
Could it be that the Texans are doing whatever it takes to keep their franchise quarterback happy and settled?
According to the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, Culley, who has a second coaching interview with the Texans Wednesday, developed a good rapport with quarterback Deshaun Watson around the same time a year ago in Orlando, Fla. for the Pro Bowl 2020.. The receivers coach and the now three-time Pro Bowl signal caller were able to make a “good connection” before the all-star game.

If the Texans leave with Culley, that means the job of offensive coordinator Tim Kelly can be sure. Culley is also said to be the Texans’ third offensive rookie for the top job. The only defensive coach Houston hired was Dom Capers in 2002. Gary Kubiak, Bill O’Brien and presumably Culley have all been offensive coaches since then.
The Texans also have a second scheduled interview on Tuesday with Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, whose team was fired from the AFC Championship game Sunday 38-24 at Arrowhead Stadium against the Kansas City Chiefs.
