The Houston Texans have looked like a different team than announced with Tyrod Taylor on the court this season. They will now be without him for a while.
The veteran quarterback will likely miss several weeks of action due to his hamstring injury and could land on the injured reserve, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported.
It’s another sizable blow for a QB depth card that features Deshaun Watson indefinitely inactive. The Texans have just four days to regroup for Thursday’s game against the Carolina Panthers.
Taylor’s absence propels 2021 third-round pick Davis Mills into the starting lineup for the immediate future. That’s uncharted territory for the Stanford product, which has only started 11 times in four years of varsity. His introduction to professional gaming was also not welcome.
Mills relieved Taylor at halftime in Sunday’s 31-21 loss to the Browns when the game was tied at 14. His first two practices ended in a three-and-out and an interception. The 22-year-old QB would settle in, converting a pair of third downs in the air and another pulling a pass interference call before hitting Brandin Cooks for a 2-yard touchdown. But after the Browns took a 10-lead at the end of the fourth, Houston went three-and-out and missed a field goal on their subsequent possessions falling to 1-1 this season.
The rookie finished 8 of 18 for 102 yards with TD and INT. This was, of course, in stark contrast to the level at which Taylor had performed over the previous six quarters. The 2015 Pro Bowler completed 70.5% of his throws this year for 416 yards and three no-pick touchdowns, while covering 55 yards and one score. The 6ft 4in Mills will not offer such mobility (nor will the option of Boy Scout Team Jeff Driskel) and have dealt with their own durability issues before, but he is considered a polite passer who excited the Texans’ brass. enough to claim it with its first selection last April.
His audition for the long-term job, which could extend into upcoming games against the Bills and Patriots, has now come sooner than expected.
