Texans release Anthony Miller: Broncos, Patriots among logical landing points for former Bears wide receiver

Just over two months after trading for him and just three days after playing three-quarters of their offensive snaps, the Texans released wide receiver Anthony Miller, as first reported by Aaron Wilson. A former Bears second-round pick, Miller joined Houston in late July in a draft pick trade, and he scored the team’s only touchdown on his Week 3 debut against the Panthers. Miller recorded just one catch on Sunday in a 40-0 loss to the Bills, and is now on the open market.

The 26-year-old wide receiver shone as a receiver in Chicago, scoring seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2018 and recording 52 catches for 656 yards the following year. However, he averaged just 9.9 yards per reception in 2020, before hitting the depth chart this summer. Joining Brandin Cooks in Houston, he was one of the Texans’ most experienced spreaders, but only managed one of five goals against the Bills in Week 4, his first official start of the year.

Where could he go next? Here are some logical landing points:

Broncos

With Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler on the sidelines, they could use a bit of depth. Vic Fangio also coached against Miller in Chicago, where the veteran had flashes. Out of the slot, he could possibly be a low risk outlet for Teddy Bridgewater.

Baker Mayfield has struggled in recent weeks, and it coincided with Jarvis Landry’s absence from the slot machine. Landry will be back eventually, but they could still use the insurance to balance Kevin Stefanski’s offense.

Foals

Zach Pascal has provided a bit of the occasional pop this year, but with TY Hilton sidelined and not a ton of production elsewhere at the receiver, why wouldn’t Indy give it a try here, giving Carson Wentz another in-game option. of passes?

Patriots

They’ve got some extra cash now that Stephon Gilmore is off the books, and they’re still eager to take chances with scrapped vets. More than that, even with Kendrick Bourne finding targets lately, they could offer Mac Jones another option.
