Texans fan Will fuller will miss Week 1 of the 2021 regular season thanks to his six-game PED suspension in November, but he remains one of the most intriguing receivers set for unrestricted free agency in March. This is especially true as players like Kenny golladay and Chris Godwin are increasingly likely to stick with their current clubs, pushing Fuller higher on the wishlist for teams in need.
And as Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle writes, it looks like Fuller will indeed hit the open market. Fuller and QB Deshaun Watson enjoy a close friendship, and given Watson’s relationship with the team at the moment, Wilson says Fuller won’t be back in Houston unless he’s affected by the franchise label (a reconciliation between the Texans and Watson could change that, but the situation seems irreversible.). However, multiple league sources say they don’t expect Houston to use the tag on Fuller, even though the club would like to get him back.
After all, the Texans are only $ 3.9 million under the cap right now, and while restructuring and releasing players like RB David johnson will give them a little extra space, it may not be enough to haul Fuller on a franchise tag of around $ 16 million. Instead, the team could continue to roll with Brandin cooks – who thrived during Fuller’s suspension – with Randall Cobb and young players Keke Coutee and Chad hansen.
Spotrac says Fuller is in line for a four-year contract worth $ 67.8 million, which looks about right. The $ 16.9 million average would put Fuller in the top 10 of the WR market, and although he struggled with injuries throughout his professional career, he was finally on track to play a full season of 16 games for the first time before being suspended. His speed and explosiveness would be a boon for most receiving corps, so while injury history is a concern, he shouldn’t be short of contenders. Last season he was on track for almost 1,300 receiving yards and double-digit touchdowns. His average of 16.6 yards per reception was a career high and reflects his ability to play.
