Texas and Oklahoma at the SEC? Live updates as the 12 Great Powers could kick off conference realignment

As if college football’s playoff expansion and name, image and likeness rights weren’t enough to turn the sport upside down, another round of conference realignment appears to be only a matter of time. . Texas and Oklahoma have contacted the SEC to quit the Big 12 and join the nation’s most powerful conference, sources Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports said.

Quoting “a senior official of the college knowing the situation”, the Houston ChronicleBrent Zwerneman first reported that the SEC could announce the Longhorns and Sooners additions “in a few weeks.” Yes, things can go that fast.

While SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, as well as officials from Texas and Oklahoma have all issued statements declining to comment on these reports, there has been no outside denial at this point. This despite resistance from some tangential parties, namely Texas A&M (not wanting another Lone Star State team in the SEC) and Oklahoma State (not wanting to be left alone in the Big 12).

This is the second time in just over a decade that the Longhorns and Sooners have seriously considered leaving the Big 12. Returning in the last round of realignment, schedules (with the Cowboys) hit the 30’s. minutes after they left for what was then the Pac-10.

The additions of Texas and Oklahoma would make the SEC the first 16-team superconference while simultaneously adding massive branding power to a league already considered to be the best in college sport. Whether these programs are leaving now or leaving for the SEC in particular, their departure from the Big 12 seems inevitable.
