LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Little Reese Hamsmith, not quite 2 years old, died Thursday morning after weeks of surgeries and battery-swallowing treatments in November.
Reese suffered from burns to her throat, esophagus and vocal cords.
The girl will be remembered as a “brave, outgoing and sassy 17-month-old girl,” her family said.
It was a remote on the floor with its battery door open that was the clue to Trista Hamsmith that her coughing daughter Reese might have swallowed the battery inside that remote.
The Hamsmiths took their daughter to the emergency room at Lubbock University Medical Center where an x-ray confirmed their fears.
They could see that she had swallowed a button cell battery, but did not know the full extent of the damage.
Pediatric surgeon and Texas Tech doctor Dr Thomas McGill told KCBD: “Batteries (when swallowed) should be removed as soon as possible.
He adds that the damage is evident when you use endoscopy to see the battery lodged in the throat.
“Often what you see is that the lining is completely black, like you’re roasting a marshmallow,” he says.
Trista and her husband moved Reese from UMC to Texas Children’s in Houston for several surgeries to repair the damage.
Unfortunately, the girl died Thursday morning.
