A couple from Texas were refused service at a restaurant for wearing masks.
Natalie Wester spoke to CBS DFW, a local television station, about her experience with her husband, Jose, and a few friends.
Last week, she said, the Westers traveled to Hang Time, a bar and restaurant in Rowlett, 20 miles outside of Dallas, for a rare outing.
“If you’ve been new parents before, spending those few hours outdoors once or twice a month is very important for your mental health,” Natalie said.
The Westers are both fully vaccinated but remain masked inside to protect their four-month-old son, who is immunocompromised. At Hang Time, a waiter asked them to remove the masks.
“Our waitress came over, sat down next to me and said, ‘Our manager told me to come over because I’m nicer than him … But it’s political and I need you to take your masks, “” Natalie said.
When they said they didn’t want to do it, they were asked to leave.
Like many other states in the United States, Texas has struggled to cope with an increase in Covid cases and deaths from the infectious variant of the Delta virus, and resistance to vaccines. Nonetheless, Governor Greg Abbott, who himself tested positive in August, tried to ban mask warrants.
Hang Time has a “no mask” policy. Its owner, identified only as Tom, said: “I think the overall reaction with the masks is ludicrous in the United States right now.”
Speaking to CBS DFW, he said the “no mask” rule was part of the restaurant’s dress code and that he reserved the right to refuse business.
The policy was not posted in the restaurant, the resort said, adding that before placing guests, a hostess informed customers that they must remove masks at the door. On Monday, the Hang Time website made no mention of the rule. Calls for comment went unanswered.
The owner told CBS DFW that while he was unaware the Westers have an immunocompromised child, he plans to continue enforcing the policy.
“I spent my money in the business, my blood sweat and my tears in this business, and I don’t want masks here,” he said.
